The NEW Vari-Grind 2 restrains tool motion in two directions. The side to side motion of the tool is restrained so that the tool cannot slip off the side of the wheel. The pivot point on the new Vari-Grind 2 is also restrained. These changes increase safety and reduce the possibility of mistakes while sharpening.

We have designed it with a bearing based clamp and addressed the problems inherent in bearing clamping. All bearings have clearance which allows the outer race to displace axially in relation to the inner race. When pressure is applied with a bearing, the race that is not applying the pressure does nothing. So for example, a 1/2" bowl gouge is being clamped with a bearing, if the inner race is attached to the clamp screw the outer race does not apply pressure and the inner race rotates with the clamp screw. Essentially the bearing clamp is acting not like a bearing but like a solid steel clamp. Our solution is to put a nylon cap on the bearing and put relief inside the cap so that the inner race can move and allow the outer race to do the clamping. This allows the bearing to rotate as it should. Further, the nylon cap cannot damage the tool and can be easily replaced if it ever wears out.

The truly exciting feature of the new Vari-Grind 2 is the patented pivot point location. The cutting edge of the tool moves in a true cylindrical motion about the adjusting rod. This is a totally unique feature and is patent applied for. This feature imparts multiple benefits. The first is that both a true fingernail and a true side grind can be ground with the jig at any bevel angle. The other and greatest benefit is that tools are easier to sharpen. A properly shaped cutting edge is a conical section. The new Vari-Grind 2 moves the tool in a cylindrical motion and the bevel angle makes it conical. While it is still possbile to make a bad grind, it is now much easier to do a correct grind.
